The times, they are a-changin'
Nov. 14th, 2017 01:43 pmThe weekend of the 11th and 12th was spent loading and unloading a large moving van to clear out a storage space. Ibuprofen is my friend after all of that. I think the only parts of me that don't hurt are my earlobes and the tip of my nose. Approaching retirement and slowly working toward getting OUT of the Bay area. The commute traffic has been getting worse over the past few years, and I'd rather not have to wear an 'I see stupid people' t-shirt as my uniform of the day during the work week. We've purchased a house in Yuba City. Area is reasonably built up, with a fair number of grocery stores, restaurants, large chain stores and traffic is very light. Sacramento is close enough for anything we can't buy locally. Still working in Mountain View, but in the process of job seeking while still employed. Lots of minor repairs that need to be done on the new house, but the majority of them I can deal with. Carpets all need to be cleaned, which is the task for Sunday the 19th of November. Previous owner had a large dog that I think was part horse, and wasn't entirely housebroken. We were told that they had tried to steam clean the rugs, and the stains wouldn't come out, so there was a $1,000 dollar credit that wound up in the paperwork as 'assistance with closing costs', but was originally tagged for carpet replacement. Just for grins, I tried using some carpet spot pretreat on the 'unremoveable' stains, let it work for about 5 minutes, and blotted it with a clean microfiber towel. About 98% of the stain came out, so I think the previous owner just wanted to get the sale over and done with. The roof needs some work on one of the valleys over the front door, so we'll be hiring someone to deal with that. The house came with a jacuzzi type tub in the master bathroom, but, whoever installed it gave ZERO thought to access for repairs. Tile on the surround inside the house, with no access hatch. Looks like I need to order up a HUGE stack of the grout cutter blades for my Rockwell Sonicrafter. Great little tool, a bit on the noisy side, and, like many specialty tools, you don't need it often, but when you do, it makes short work of what could be a very unpleasant task. The other option would be to cut an access hatch through the exterior wall, but, making something like that weather-tight would be more of an exercise than I'm prepared to deal with at the moment. More later as things develop.
